So...it has been awhile since that SAR Wild Run. Since then, not much has happened and a bit has happened.
1. Ro’s preschool seems to be going okay, but we don’t know for sure because he refuses to talk about it. He just says he has fun there. We stopped asking him if he learned any Spanish since he’s in a dual-immersion class because we were worried that he would feel too pressured to learn and would feel bad if he wasn’t learning as fast as he should. He did tell me that they read about Pete the Cat and his new shoes — in English. 🙄 But he did say he was making friends.
I took him to preschool one day because I needed to make an addition I forgot about on his emergency contacts. He started to get upset as soon as we reached the gate, but I told him we were going to get breakfast before class. He watched all the classes meet in the cafeteria as he ate his breakfast. We were the last ones to get to his class — not really that big of a deal — and he threw a fit. I checked out his “Pregunta Del Dia” board, which said “¿Ustedes han sentido tristes?” He continued his emphatic “yes,” and so I put his magnetic name tag on the “Si” side of the board. I ended up leaving while he was still mid meltdown, but he later said he got over it soon after.
2. I signed up Ro for ninja classes in Clovis. I would have gone for a dojo closer to where we live in Fresno, but it is the only ninjitsu dojo in the area. I was more worried about taking Ro to an aikido dojo and then having him not be too interested. The other deciding factor was that he could start at three years old instead of four. I asked him awhile ago if he wanted to take ninja classes. He replied with, "I already know ninja moves." I told him that ninjas maintained a "beginner's mind," practiced their moves often, and attended classes in order to learn new moves. A week later, he asked if he could take ninja classes.
Last weekend, I finally got him to the class. He was super shy about starting his first class. Before we even left for class, he said he wasn't sure about joining. I told him he could watch the first class with me on the side if he wasn't sure about working out with the group. He was content with this plan. I ended up getting us there an hour earlier when I had intended to get us there only a half hour early to get the paperwork signed. We walked on the bike path for a half hour to pass the time before class.
I signed the waiver right away and the teacher gave us a quick tour. Ro told the teacher, "I already know some ninja moves." He showed her a few of his moves and she promptly named each one and described what it was used for. At the end of the tour, it was time for class to start. Ro jumped right up to bow in and then had a lot of fun at class. On the way home, he asked, "So, I have preschool, daycare, and ninja school. How many schools am I going to have?" I think this is good enough for now since other sports might be added later. B was a little sore at me for signing Ro up without consulting him (absolutely my fault; no sarcasm here; I just got too excited by Ro's enthusiasm about the first class), but B understood why I signed him up right away when he took Ro to his second class during the week. Ro was a little disappointed his gi wasn't ready yet, but he had a really good class again.
3. I started playing trombone again with the New Horizons community band! I had a rocky start when I missed the earlier bus and had to call an Uber to take me to the meeting. When I arrived, I realized that I had left my check that I needed to pay for the sheet music at home when I cleaned out my wallet to look for change for the bus. I had to briskly walk six minutes in the heat to the nearest ATM and back. Luckily, no one really notices that sort of thing anymore and I didn't get mugged. When I did finally get my sheet music, the band director recognized me as B's wife since they go bicycling on Saturday mornings.
The rest of my section was very welcoming. The band seemed pretty big even though they said only ten people were new this year. There were very many comments about how young I was and I replied with, "Oh, good. This moisturizer is working." One person asked me if I was done with school. Since I technically only graduated last year, I replied simply with, "Yes, finally." A friend I met at work had told me about this band a few years ago. The music isn't very hard, and I only play the second or third trombone parts, which is great because I feel much more relaxed. We'll be having concerts in December, which leaves plenty of time for me to get back into reading music again more comfortably.
4. I checked out few aikido classes last night. I intended to check out the basic aikido class and the general aikido class after it, but the class afterwards was a weapons class. Since I had the time allotted to go, I went ahead and stayed to learn the aikido style of jo (short staff) fighting. Lucky for me, the instructor let me take both classes for only one punch on my ten class trial punch card. The basics class was a good start. I already knew how to roll from taking so many jujitsu classes, but I got to learn how to roll backwards since we usually backfall instead of rolling in jujitsu. After that, we went through the six basic movements and turns. The jo class was much more difficult because it felt like I was jumping into the middle even though we were using only three moves in different sequences. I mainly learned that my hands don't seem to move as fluidly as I would like. I have a lot to work on anyways. I'm pretty sore today, but I can't figure out if it's from biking the nine miles round trip to go to the class or from the actual class. It may be awhile before I go to the next class due to time and because I want a chance to practice on my own for a bit.
5. B is pretty well adjusted to work now. He's letting his coworkers see more of his sarcastic and dry humor. He also survived his first election at work with a bit of overtime. He is also still cycling with his group and wants to try to get more evening rides. We decided that I can't do multiple events between two days otherwise he can't get enough breathing time since Ro will keep talking nonstop if he realizes he can get away with it (though he'll also muscle in and dominate the conversation anyways). For awhile, B and I were talking about hiring help to clean the house before Mom and Dennis visit to make things easier, but then we decided to try to schedule things to make it more manageable. They'll be visiting during next week for my birthday though.
