Spring Break

It's been a fun couple weeks. Ro had Spring Break a couple weeks ago. I thought B and his mom were fighting because she usually offers to watch Ro during Spring Break. She didn't this time. I had a few site visits and trainings to go to. When I told B I was considering asking his mom, he asked which days I needed and took them off instead. It turned out he had some time to burn and wanted to spend time with Ro.

B and Ro went to Bakersfield for a rally one day when I had a site visit in west Kings County and the border of Kern County. Then we hung out at home doing nothing on the second day when I was at a training in San Jose. While in San Jose, I had a chance to catch up with Nick and Ariel and then had dinner with Emmy and Brian. Emmy had bought popcorn from Ro for his annual school fundraiser, but I completely forgot to take it during this visit. I may try to find time or schedule another visit back to the bay to get it to her. She said she otherwise might not make it back until Mother's Day.

Other than the trips, I worked from home while Ro spent too much time playing Pokemon on my old Nintendo DS lite and watching shows on his tablets. I tried to get him to read, but it's hit or miss with him. I think he prefers graphic novels to regular novels. The Spy School series was capturing his interest for awhile and he's starting the Spanish version of the Max Einstein series.

His week back as school was uneventful. He missed his friends. He actually did do his suggested reading over Spring Break, but it was like pulling teeth to try to get him to fill out his reading log for a prize. Then he did it and got a bag of chips.

Me: Was it worth it?
Him: Yeah.
Me: Are you going to just do it next time and not fight me on it?
Him: Probably not.

This last weekend was Porchfest. Porchfest is a thing that started up after COVID where random bands play on random porches in the Tower District. Many different kinds of bands play instead of just one genre. B didn't seem interested in any this year, but I talked B and Ro into going with me to see Iwanaga and For the Record. The first is a ska band I had heard about from some friends at church that turned out to be ok. The second was a band I had seen before and their music is pretty catchy. Ro was uninterested in standing for an hour and was turned off by the foul language. He and B walked off to meet up with B's mom just before For the Record played a song that he would have recognized. He didn't seem sad about it though so it was probably for the best. We didn't see anyone I knew, but B found out a coworker's daughter moved across the street from his mom's house and saw a few people that he didn't want to talk to while waiting for my bands to play.

I still need to find a ska band. I have this feeling of not being good enough to be in one, but these two that I saw were playing in pretty low registers. It seemed weird. I joked with B about joining more bands when I retire. I don't know if B is still trying to retire sooner. I've been happy doing my job because it always felt like there was a need for someone to do it so I don't really have a plan for retirement.

I have been trying to take care of my health though. I'm still trying to either get my suggested steps in or do a cardio workout. I did notice that my shoulders were really starting to ache and pop more than usual after a month. I went to the doctor to get it figured out and make sure I don't have a degenerative anything with my joints. The doc ordered xrays for my left shoulder and both ankles. Nothing really came up other than mild swelling in my ankles and a benign lump in my lung that may have been leftover from Valley Fever. My 60-70 year old band friend recently came back from a shoulder surgery. He said he was feeling pain in his shoulder, xrays were ok, but an MRI showed tears that needed the surgery. My doc had ordered physical therapy anyways so I'm hoping that the exercise tears are just natural and will heal best with physical therapy. The main reason why I was worried was because I had been lifting weights months ago and wasn't feeling the pain or popping that happened after this consistent cardio. We'll see what happens.

I love you and miss you.

March Update

B and I got our second Pfizer shots recently.  It's hard to tell if we're having side effects or psychosomatic symptoms.  After my first shot, I had some shortness of breath overnight, I was tired, I had bad allergies, my arm was super sore and I had weird upper back pain the next day.  After the second, I made sure to go running and that seemed to take care of the symptoms for the first night and next day.  I made the mistake of having a drink, thinking I was in the clear, but then I had random cold sweats and waves of pain in my head and back overnight with weird dreams about the pain and how it wouldn't go away until I got more shots.  Eventually, everything went away as if nothing ever happened.  B got his second shot last Friday and felt a bit of tiredness, but he went on a forty-five mile bike ride this morning -- the first group ride his bike gang has gone on since COVID started shutting things down -- and he seems fine now.  He's more worried a...

I hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas! Ours was pretty good.  Quick backtrack to Thanksgiving: We just did a small early dinner in Gramma Wanda’s backyard. It was warn and we ended up taking jackets off as well as ate inside. Torstein came with us to hang out with Sophie to be weirdo’s together. Ro also lost both of his front teeth and another bottom tooth that week. On a few Saturdays around that time, Ro went to a sort of Nasa coding camp at Fresno State since we had a break from golf. He ended being sick for two out of the three sessions, but he enjoyed the content. I also got a free community library card at the Fresno State library (job perk) and spent a lot of time knitting at Collect Coffee. Ro said he didn’t like spending a lot of time away from home though. He’s registered for baseball in spring, will be doing golf all year, and planning on tennis in summer (no refunds on that one for rain though the other two are flexible/flat rate).  Ro had a winter show at his school. The cafeteri...

May Update

It's June 1st! So it's been awhile. I feel like this month has passed by, but I don't remember what we did. I think I mentioned Bookfest 2025 in my last post so I'll look through my calendar and figure out what I did since then.  The weather has been pretty decent all month up until last week after Memorial Day weekend. I set up a card table in the garage one day to be able to work from home and let Ro play with his remote control batmobile and skateboard across the street. Tor was out with us and mostly stuck around.    Work from home setup complete with desk muppet B and Ro have been checking out churches because Ro has starting wondering what religions are out there. B hasn't been making me go to the Christian ones (or any of them really...because I don't want to). Ro seems to have this idea that the Christian ones don't have as much of an emphasis of the "Do this or you'll go to Hell" aspect. He's in for a rude awakening. Mom has plans...
